It is one of the most consistent patterns in residential renovation, and it is one of the most expensive habits in home design.
By the Time Lighting Gets Discussed, the Important Decisions Are Already Made
Lighting is not just about choosing a fitting. It is about where the fittings go, how many circuits there are, whether there are dimmer provisions, and whether the ceiling has been designed to accommodate the kind of scheme that would actually serve the space well.
All of those decisions get locked in during the early stages of a renovation, when the electrician is running cables and the plasterer is about to close the ceiling. Once the ceiling is up, the cable positions are fixed. Adding a new downlight position means cutting a new hole and chasing a new cable run, which is disruptive, messy, and costs more than doing it right the first time.
Leaving lighting to the end means making all those structural decisions without a lighting plan. You end up with cables in the centre of each room because that is where the original single point was, rather than in the positions a considered lighting layout would actually require.

The right moment is during the design stage, alongside decisions about flooring, cabinetry, and wall finishes. Not after them. Lighting interacts with all of those elements and needs to be specified with them in mind.
At that stage, questions like how many downlight circuits are needed, where accent lighting should be positioned, whether dimmer provisions are required, and what IP ratings are needed in wet areas can all be answered cleanly and implemented without any additional cost or disruption.
The practical step is straightforward. Before your next renovation progresses past the design stage, have a conversation about lighting. Not about specific fittings necessarily, but about positions, circuits, and intent. That conversation takes an hour at most and changes the outcome significantly.
