Walk through any newly renovated Malaysian home and you will almost certainly find LED strip lighting somewhere. Under the kitchen cabinets, behind the TV, along a bedroom ceiling cove, sometimes all three at once. It has become one of the most popular lighting additions in residential renovations, and for good reason in some applications. In others, it is being used to solve problems it was never designed for, and the result rarely looks the way people hoped.
What Strip Lighting Is Actually Built For

LED strips are a linear, low-output light source. Each strip contains a series of small LED chips mounted at intervals along a flexible circuit board, producing a diffused wash of light along the length of the run. The key characteristic is that the light is distributed, not directional. It spreads softly across a surface rather than projecting a focused beam.
This makes it excellent for indirect and accent applications. It is not a primary light source and should not be treated as one. The most common misuse of LED strips is expecting them to handle the ambient lighting of a room on their own. They cannot do this effectively, and relying on them for general illumination produces a room that feels atmospheric but poorly lit, comfortable to sit in but difficult to actually do anything in.
Where Strip Lighting Does Its Best Work
Cove lighting is the classic application, and it works precisely because no one is looking at the strips directly. The strips sit inside a recess or behind a pelmet at ceiling level, and the light they produce washes gently across the ceiling above. Done well, the ceiling appears to glow. The room feels taller, softer, and more considered. The source of the light is invisible, which is the whole point.
Under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen is another strong application. Strips mounted to the underside of overhead cabinets direct light downward onto the countertop, where it is actually needed for food preparation. This is a practical rather than decorative use of strip lighting, and it performs the task very well. It eliminates the shadow that a ceiling fitting casts on anyone standing at the counter, and the light lands directly on the work surface.
Accent lighting for shelving, niches, display cabinetry, and joinery is where strip lighting adds genuine design value. A backlit floating shelf, a lit display niche in a feature wall, or strips along the back panel of a wardrobe all use the distributed nature of strip lighting to create depth and visual interest. The strips highlight the object or surface rather than the fitting itself, which is exactly how accent lighting is supposed to work.
Where It Falls Short
The problems with LED strip lighting tend to cluster around three situations. The first is using strips as the primary or only light source in a space. The output is too low and too diffuse for this, and the room ends up dim and flat even when the strips are running at full brightness.
The second is poor installation quality. LED strips are only as good as the surface they are mounted on and the diffuser profile they sit inside. Strips installed directly onto a surface without a proper aluminium channel and diffuser show individual hotspots, visible chip spacing, and uneven brightness along the run. A proper aluminium extrusion with a frosted diffuser distributes the light evenly and makes the finished result look considered rather than improvised.
The third is using the wrong colour temperature for the application. Warm white at 2700K suits cove lighting, bedroom accents, and living area applications. Neutral to cool white at 4000K or above is appropriate for kitchen task lighting and any application where colour accuracy matters. Mixing strip colour temperatures within the same visible sightline creates a visual inconsistency that is difficult to resolve without changing the strips entirely.
Getting It Right Before You Buy
Strip lighting is one of those products where the difference between a quality installation and a poor one comes down almost entirely to how it is specified and installed rather than how much was spent. The channel, the diffuser, the colour temperature, and the control system all matter as much as the strip itself.
